Depends on the guitar. I have several vintage Kramer Barettas. Some have 10’s, some have 9.5’s. They all feel different. I don’t lose sleep over it though! Onstage, through a cranked amp, who knows? Only you.

I realise that this vid is years old, but it's the best comparison I've found for these pickups. Both sound good. FWIW, I've gone from stock pickups to boutique back to stock more than once. IME, most boutique have hyped top end that is initially impressive - apparent clarity - but this emphasis invariably means a loss of lower mids, which is where guitar 'sits' in mixes and bands. I have some vintage guitars and the one thing none of them has is that high-end shimmer. Relatedly, is it bad for a guitar sound to be 'rough' or less 'hi-fi'? Do we really want to hear each individual string? The answers to these questions, I submit, are not necessarily universally, or even generally, 'yes'.

I have a filtertron equipped 6120 20013? and just got a 2007 5120 with tv classics. huge difference thru a 66 Deluxe reverb 12" speaker. More Duane Eddy ish with the classics. More sparkly and clear. Could not hear much difference thru a non tube fender sidekick 25 with 10 inch speaker.

Thank you for putting the time in on this video, this sort of comparison is really beneficial. I like the stock set, but I preferred the Classics: they have more midrange and more high end sparkle, they sound awesome in a Jet/Penguin, would love to compare to TV Jones Ray Butts set

the head stock looks more on the wider side rather than narrower, correct ? As you know I'm sure some Tele's have a more narrow head stock , Thanks !

That was a good demo.....and here is what I heard. The 9-42's sounded more clear. Of course you need to consider what feels the most comfortable for you to play. Heavy hand may = heavier strings so it doesn't get sloppy. For your demo......my ears......definitely the 9's. Thanks!

Suhr looks like a standard kramer neck, nice choice, hardly ever see anyone playing the HSS strats or kramers anymore, such a versitile Platform and my choice for just about any tone possible, great playing by the way, Sub'd in for both reasons.

Both sound good and for different applications. You can kinda get the best of both worlds with a guitar like this as you can still get twangy sounds in the in-between positions

Do you know what type of gretsch filtertrons these are? Ie. FT '67, High Sensitivity etc.

Great sound quality in your comparison. You can't go wrong with the TV Jones Classics, but I thought the stock Filtertrons also sounded fantastic in that guitar. If I had a guitar that sounded like that, I wouldn't mess with the pickups.

When using noiseless or hot rails pickups can you use the Headrush pedalboard to dial in the Strat or Tele sound tone your looking for?

You did it. The ultimate strat. The best strat tones are the neck pickup and the neck/middle pickups. If you want a great fender bridge pickup, get a tele. By putting the SD hot rails pickup in the bridge, you’ve created an instrument that is versatile and worth playing in any pickup position. It’s an easy modification that turns a Strat into a do-everything instrument. One little change opens up a whole world of possibilities.
